Why do braces stain teeth and is a result of the doctors oversight or carelessness?
Answer Alex, Back in the early days of orthodontics bands were cemented on each of the teeth. In those days the cements that were used to seal the band to the tooth were made of materials that might have caused staining of the teeth. About 50 years ago, new cements were developed which were much better and did not leave stains on the teeth. About 30 years ago there were two major developments that greatly improved orthodontic appliances. A new type of cement was developed which not only did not leave a stain on the tooth, it also released fluoride to the enamel making the tooth stronger and harder. A second improvement was the development of bonded brackets which eliminated the need for bands and cements on all but the very back teeth. The bonded bracket left no stain on the teeth and actually allowed most of the tooth to remain uncovered. Problem with this was that it required the patient to have excellent oral hygiene…something that is necessary anyway for good dental health. Failu
