Why do bands sign to record labels?

0

The primary reasons from a bands perspective is Financial backing, distribution channels and business skills. back in the days where the internet didn’t exist the only way to get music out there was through large retailers and music videos these were and still are in the realms of music controlled by large record labels , Sony BMG, Time Warner etc they have the power because they own almost everything in mainstream media to place music wherever they so desire (tv , film, stores etc). However it’s not necessarily so important for bands to be signed these days. with the internet and a couple hundred bucks worth of half decent equipment (which most kids could easily get for birthdays and christmas lol) it is perfectly possible to record and distribute music on your own ‘independently’. of course it takes a lot of determination to do so because unlike the major record labels you have to start at the grassroots and start climbing.
