Why do authors such as Jane Austen and the Brontes miss out place names?
Another reason could have been that people were not as “well-travelled” in the time the Brontes and Jane Austen, so rather than feed their readers mis-information, which can be really irritating, they missed out the names so that the reader could place the characters somewhere familiar to them. As another answerer has said, if you are engrossed in the story, it doesn’t really matter where it is set, but mis-information does bug me, and would stop me reading to story.
