Why do Americans vote on Tuesdays not Saturdays for their general federal election and primary elections?

The reasoning behind Tuesday started over 150 years ago. Back then many had to travel a total of 2-3 days to vote, one day to get to where they could vote, one day to vote and if there was time they could start getting back home but if not on the third day they would complete their trip to get back home. Since Sunday was a day for rest and worship, it was decided that Sunday could not be one of these three days. So it was set up so that on Monday people could travel on this day, Tuesday they would vote, and then Wednesday they could travel again to get back home (if they weren’t able to travel back on Tuesday).
