Why do Americans throw rice at weddings and Indians….?

You know, as an American, I always wondered this myself. I suppose the rice draws all the birdies and pigeons over so they gather around the bride to lift up the back of her veil so she can run into the car more easily–and off to her honeymoon. And maybe the east Indians do this at funerals as a “good luck” omen thingy-blessing them to be reincarnated as a wealthier person in their next reincarnated life lavished with fine banquets and feasts and riches.
