It’s English, just American English as opposed to British English. I believe American English was intentionally differentiated from British English (Websters Dictionary?) in the past making it more logical in some ways but losing some sense of the derivation of words from their European and Scandinavian roots. Even within Britain we have a variety of dialects and a range of words that have meaning only within particular regions. English is not a static language but continues to draw on a number of sources, increasingly American.
