Why do Americans have college fraternities…?

0

The fraternities evolved from the European student drinking societies (if you’ve ever been to Heidelberg, you’ll know what I mean). The sororities were just an attempt to have a parallel structure on the female side. However, if your experience with the Greek system is based upon films you’ve seen, don’t believe it. Yes, they do have parties, but they also contribute to charities, provide opportunities to practice leadership skills, encourage studying, and create “families” within the structure of the larger university. I was never in a sorority, and I don’t think I would ever have been the type to be in one, but I have had many students who were, and they get a lot more out of them than drunken orgies. As to college, your high school is the equivalent of our community college. Therefore, our students spend more time in their college/university years, and our universities are less-subsidized and thus more expensive than yours. Essentially, in order to get an equivalent education to you
