Why do American schools persist to teach that Columbus discovered America when he most certainly didn ?

It is a fact that Christopher Columbus discovered the “New world” in 1492 AD. This consisted of the Caribbean Islands, South America and Central America. He did not explore North America. Even though this region of the world may have already been found by other people in previous centuries, the word “discover” is still utilised appropriately in respect to Columbus. In Medieval times the “Americas” was not known to have existed, and therefore Christopher Columbus literally “discovered” the area for Europe. Whenever the word “discover” is coined to Columbus, it does not refer to him being the first individual to map or find such continents. It merely expresses that he was the first navigator to establish a permanent connection with both theatres.
