Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum is responsible for detoxification (including alcohol) of foreign substances. The liver is responsible for most of your body’s detoxification processes. Liver cells respond to the constant influx of alcohol by synthesizing more Smooth ER to try and cope with the increased presence of the toxic substance.
