Why do Albany and Millersburg need a new source of water?
A new water supply source is critical for both Albany and Millersburg. The communities are growing and expect to exceed current maximum daily demands within the next few years. When land in both cities is fully developed, Albany expects to need about 40 mgd and Millersburg will need about 6 mgd during peak use times. The joint water project will increase capacity for Albany by 10 mgd initially, and ultimately 20 mgd to accommodate demands from future customers. Excluding Millersburg, the current maximum daily water demand is about 15 mgd. Both communities are also concerned about the security and reliability of the historic canal and treatment plant. The canal is an open channel, vulnerable to contamination from surface runoff, accidental spills, or sabotage. The treatment plant is vulnerable to earthquakes. In its present location, the treatment plant cannot be upgraded or expanded enough to meet the future water needs of both communities. The joint water project will provide a redund
