Why do air routes use great circles rather than circles of latitude?
Choose two places on the Earth’s surface which have the same latitude, but whose longitudes differ by 180 degrees. Find the distance between them on a great circle route, and then compare this with the distance around the circle of latitude. Do you expect this distance to be least for places near the Equator or near the Poles – investigate how this distance varies with different latitudes.
