Why do adults participate in educational programs?
Adult learners are a rapidly growing population in todays society. But why is this the trend? On a broad scale, the generalization is that the adult has a need or desire for a new skill or piece of knowledge. However, a closer look will reveal numerous reasons that adults engage in educational opportunities. These reasons deserve further study. Merriam and Caffarella share that it is generally accepted that adults pursue education for a multiplicity of reasons including social mobility, economic development, workforce training, improved access through technology and for recreation. (1999) Knowing and understanding the reasons that adults are taking advantage of educational experiences has to be part of an instructors regimen for planning, as these reasons will have an impact on the courseits activities and its expectations.
