Why do a lot of people think Unemployment Insurance is a welfare program?
May 22, 2009 by guitarman | Posted in Government Q: I am a former unemployment adjudicator. I can say with 100% certainly that unemployment insurance is not a benefit program. It was created during the Great Depression to serve as an aid to those who lost their job through no fault of their own. There are more exceptions than there utilized to be but all cases are adjudicated by the state so the chance of fraud is very low. At my office there were both very conservative and very dispassionate people. But all of them agreed that unemployment compensation is not a partisan issue. It just wasn’t even debated. My supervisors were very cut away when they explained the history of unemployment insurance. But most of the public does not have this kind of education when it comes to unemployment insurance and that is why you get wind of all of these misconceptions out there. It is really more of a problem with ignorance or a lack of education in administrative law.
