Why discordant results?
Science itself has not clearly answered why couples become sero-discordant. But it is a hard fact based on our clinical experience and literature review that discordant couples can and do exist. There are speculations given to explain this phenomenon but we are not going to discuss the speculations in this forum. Important things to note here are: • couples should be encouraged to be tested together, and if there is discordant result, to practice safe sex consistently going forward (new HIV infection which increases risk of MTCT) • Studies conducted in African countries have concluded that once discordant does not mean always discordant. Consistent practice of safe sex is necessary to remain free from the virus. 8.
