Why Digital DAB Radio?
We know that TV has gone digital, and that it provides better reception, more channels, and widescreen pictures, some in HD. But why go digital in radio, which already works well, particularly the FM stereo variety? The answer is partly technical, but also involves increased capability and better service. The technical part is that the electromagnetic spectrum is very crowded, and there is limited room for expansion. As a result new stations now pay very big bucks for an FM license. But the real crunch comes when you cannot fit any more stations into the available spectrum. The answer is to increase the number of stations by going digital, which allows a lot of stations to share a carrier bandwidth. The frequency to be allocated will have to offer a mix of benefits.
