Why didn’t the team move forward with plans for a new stadium and mixed-use development at Candlestick Point?
After working closely with the City of San Francisco and a private development company for over a year, we determined that the project would not have provided the game day experience our fans deserve. Unfortunately, the stadium and mixed-use development had incompatible land requirements, and there were significant transportation challenges at the site. Also, the developer’s investment in the stadium was tied to its ability to sell homes in the area, and given the decline in the housing market, it created significant risk. Fans also would have been inconvenienced by the demolition of Candlestick Park and the gradual piecing together of the mixed-use development, which would have put fans in a construction zone for a decade.
