Why didn’t the crew send day to day updates to “the company” as the mission went along? Why didn’t they just consult with mission control?

In order for the Nostromo to be able to travel to other star systems in such a relatively short time, it is a given that it must have the ability to travel at faster than light (FTL) speed. Because we do not know the physics as to how they achieve FTL travel, we cannot assume that they are able to send transmissions at an even faster pace than FTL. It takes 20 minutes to receive a transmitted bit of data from the Mars Rovers, so it would take several dozen orders of magnitude more time for messages to reach earth from the Nostromo traveling in deep space. It is feasable that radio transmissions cannot travel any faster than the ship, and that therefore any message would only be received at the same time that the ship arrives.
