Why didn Orpheus retrieve his wife?
After Eurydice ran into the nest of snakes and was fatally bit on the heel, Orpheus did try to retrieve her. Going to the underworld he played his music to Hades and Perephone. They allowed them to both return to earth under the condition that he would walk infront of her and not look back til they left the underworld. But on their way to the surface, Orpheus did look back out of anxiety and she disappeared forever.
