When I was seven years old, I had malaria. I nearly died. My father was in France for two months of study. When he came back, I was lying in the bed waiting for the end. I told myself, If Im going to live, Im going to spend all my life helping peopleespecially children. It was terrible. I remember like it was yesterday. When he came back, my father, who was not a medical doctor, said, It looks like malaria. Then he went to the market and bought the right medicine (quinine). He had never given an injection before but he did it. After three injections I was recovered. So from that time I always told my parents, Im going to help people. In 1960 I began studying medicine, first in Cambodia and then in France. I came back in 1968 and worked in the public hospital in Phnom Penh. Then the coup happened in 1970. What did you do?
