Why did WDFW propose changes to the special hunt permitting system?
There were several objectives to changing the way that the permit system application process is conducted. The primary objective was to provide revenue to expand the hunter access program on private lands. Another objective was to create a permit application program that provides greater options for hunters. Because of the conditions and restrictions associated with various hunt choices, hunters have expressed dissatisfaction with the way the current system works. For example, many hunters surveyed say they would like to apply for antlerless permits, but didn’t want to lose the points they were saving for popular buck and bull permits. These concerns have merit. Under the previous system, all applications for special deer permits were randomly drawn from the same pool, each weighted according to the number of points the applicant has accumulated from past drawings.
