Why did Vince Clarke leave Depeche Mode?
As far as I can tell, Vince Clarke left Depeche Mode right after the album “Speak and Spell” because he didn’t like the direction the band was taking artistically. In fact, one can hear a distinct difference in the band after Clarke’s exit. The Depeche Mode that I know (that most of us know, I think) is a minimalist, dark, more somber sounding band. This is what I like about them, personally, and what sets them apart from other groups. Clarke reportedly said that he wasn’t happy with the “being famous” part of things either. He didn’t like being recognized, touring and stage appearances. Sources: Urbandictionary.
