Because of the Russian Revolution. There was no place in communist Russia for a Tsar when what the people were rebelling against was the autocratic rule of the Tsar. He and his family had already been deposed in 1917, but the year afterwards, the communists felt it was too dangerous to leave them alive and they were stabbed and shot. I can think of many other instances of similar things happening. In many ways the French Revolution of 1789 was quite similar – the people hated the king, queen, lords and ladies living in luxury while they didn’t have enough to eat, and that feeling amongst the people resulted in the mass murder of the aristocracy by the guillotine and, eventually, the king.and queen.
