Nicholas had not adjusted his country to the modern world, they were “An 18th century country living in a 20th century world”. The conditions the majority of the people in Russia lived under were terrible. 80% of the population was peasants/serfs and they were extremely poor. 1% of the population controlled over 25% of Russia’s wealth. The health conditions were terrible with only 50% of children surviving past the age of 5 and the average life expectancy was only 50 years old.
