Why did TIA and TBR decide to merge in the first place?
Dow: TIA had been working closely with TBR for years; the Jan. 1 formation of U.S. Travel actually made official what we had been doing on a partnership basis for some time. Two years ago, the Discover America Partnership was created to get government to understand how important it was to streamline the visa and entry processes for inbound travel and to welcome more international travelers to the U.S. We had a lot of success working on that together, and we began to see that one plus one equals three. So, in January 2008 both TBR and TIA announced to our members that it was our intention to pull the two organizations into one. As a result, many more people started to join TIA at the Board level; we went from four to 38 destinations on the Board within a year.
