Why did they include a lot of homosexual characters in Sailor Moon?
In response to some of the other answers, Japan is NOT more open about homosexuality. In Japan, homosexuality is often treated more as a media gimmick than reality. It is rarely discussed seriously and few people openly identify as gay. Japan is also very conservative in regard to sexuality in general. In fact, by law, even pornography has to be censored. Anyone who has actually lived in Japan or at least taken the time to study it’s culture beyond manga and anime will know this. As for why they were included, Sailor Moon is the brain child of Naoko Takeuchi so the only real reason for their inclusion in the manga lies with her. However, it’s popularity resulted primarily from the strength and complexity of the relationships between the characters.
