Why did they choose pit bulls as fighting dogs?
Awesome question! I was going to ask it on here myself just to see what people’s opinions were. People choose pit bulls as fighting dogs because of their tenacity and dedication to a job they’re trained to do. They are also known for their desire to please their owners as well as their tolerance to pain. They are also very strong and quick moving dogs with extra jaw muscle on the top of their heads giving them a strong bite. All these characteristics were bred into the American Pit Bull Terrier many years ago. The breeders who created the APBT did so, however, without the intention of creating a fighting dog. They originally were bred for hunting small game, most notably badgers, although they were later used for hunting other animals like feral hogs and also for rat baiting which is where they got the “pit” part of their name (competing in rat pits). The original badger application, however, would explain the need for a tenacious and fearless dog as well as one with a strong bite. Hav
