President Eisenhower sent advisors and equipment, at the request of France, to help them during the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. Two civilian American pilots working for the CIA were killed in 1954 during that battle. After the French lost and pulled out of Vietnam, the South Vietnamese requested support from America remain and we helped as a way to stop the spread of Communism to South Vietnam. footnote: After America pulled out in 1973, the war continued between the North Vietnamese and the South Vietnamese until the North captured Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, in 1975.
