Why did the theories of copernicus and galileo threaten the views of the church?
Copernicus had a theory — Galileo didn’t. He simply had evidence that supported Copernicus, and decided that Copernicus was correct. The opposition was mainly because the bible says the sun was created *for* the earth (to be a “light” for it), so it couldn’t possibly be that the earth orbited the sun…and on the story of the battle of Jericho, where god supposedly “stopped” the sun in the sky (which isn’t possible if the earth spins on its axis and orbits the sun). So the *fact* that the earth spins on its axis and orbits the sun proves the bible is not infallible — and the church then (and many christians today) wouldn’t stand for admitting the bible is fallible, so they fought facts with torture, imprisonment, and censorship. Just like today! 🙂 Notice that even the hard-core creationists today — while ignoring or denying a host of other facts that show their bible is wrong — have brushed this one aside as simply “improper interpretation.” Wonder why they can’t use that same exc
