Why did the rain shield collapse yesterday?
by Steven DiMartino on Jul 11th Comment Print | Email For the past three days I was putting out a warning that a heavy rain event was expected for the northern Mid Atlantic as an upper level trough from the west and an upper low over the southern Mid Atlantic coastal waters would merge over the northern Mid Atlantic. However, while very heavy rain did fall over portions of eastern Pennsylvania (Allentown, Pennsylvania with a record 5.67 inches for example), many other locations received less than a half inch over the Delaware River Valley and less than a tenth of an inch over the New York City metropolitan area! So what happened? Part of the rainfall in northeastern Pennsylvania was enhanced due to some slight orographic lifting as winds ahead of the cold front were from the south and southeast before veering to the southwest and then northwest.
