Why did the people of France dislike Marie Antoinette?
She was not French by birth and, although she spoke the language, she did not have any experience with the people. She misunderstood how bad conditions were because she was isolated at court. The lavish spending of the court was status quo for her, but the peasants saw it as taking food out of their mouths. They were encouraged to blame the queen by revolutionaires and rabble rousers. The real blame fell on the king and his council. They had control of the purse and made the decisions.
