Why did the number of people going to church drop after world war one?
The reason there was such a large drop of people going to church after WWI had to do with their mistaken view of the end times, which is called eschatology. There are 3 main views of the period called the millennium. They are Pre-Millennial (which means that there will be a literal 1000 year reign of Christ on earth after his second coming), AMillennial (which means that there is not a literal reign, but we are in that time period now in Revelation 20) and PostMillennial. Postmillennialism was very prominent before WWI. They believed that Christians would continue to make the world a better and better place and this would usher in the return of Christ. It takes quite an allegorical view of scripture to come to this position, and you really have to ignore a lot of passages that talk about how it will get worse and worse at the end.
