The short answer to your question is that Sherman wasn’t really an abolitionist. He didn’t care about “black people.” He cared about the Union. He thought 10,000s of refugees would impede his mission accomplishing that end. “ONly 6% of the entire southern polItician owned slaves. There were 100,000 free black men who fought for the south. And black people and white people got along pretty well.” Lol, yes, despite the fact that white people could own black people, sure. Let’s analyze that 6% number. That is 6% of the total Southern population, including black people, slaves. In many states, slaves constituted as much as 40% of the population, so we can see right there how that figure is misleading. Further, it was generally and nearly exclusively only the man who owned property. There goes 50% of the population again. When we really look at the number, slightly over one third of the Southern families owned slaves. Four slaving owning states decided not to join the Confederacy.
