Why did the newspaper encourage us to apply for FEMA aid – was it just to get personal information?
We encouraged people to contact FEMA because local, state and federal officials said this would allow them to discover to what extent the community was affected by the hurricanes. Local agencies used application numbers FEMA provided to apply for federal grants. FEMA also said that people needed to register to receive services such as SBA loans. The newspaper wanted the information from FEMA so that we could analyze the data and see why there were reported differences in what people received. We also wanted to see if FEMA paid for damage on homes that did not have a record of damage.
