Why did the Metepenagiag Mikmaq Nation need to hold a ratification vote?
As part of settling these specific claims, the Government of Canada seeks to bring closure to the land titles by confirming that the Metepenagiag Mi’kmaq Nation does not have any remaining interest in the two parcels of land included in these specific claims. Consequently, a ratification vote was required under section 39 of the Indian Act. All members eligible to vote, on or off reserve, were asked to exercise their voting rights on June 14, 2007. During the referendum held on June 14, 2007, 70 per cent of the eligible Metepenagiag members who cast their votes, voted in favour of the agreement.
