Flu concerns spur J&W to cancel class 01:00 AM EDT on Monday, May 4, 2009 By RICHARD SALIT Journal Staff Writer PROVIDENCE — The state Health Department on Sunday reported four new cases of “probable” swine flu in Rhode Island, including a third case at Johnson & Wales University and one at a middle school in Narragansett. At the request of the Health Department, Johnson & Wales agreed to cancel all classes and activities on Monday. Narragansett’s Pier Middle School will remain closed through Wednesday. But the department emphasized that none of the nine cases identified thus far is serious and that the disease, formally designated H1N1 influenza, does not appear to be spreading here. “All of these people have mild symptoms and they are recovering or are recovered,” said health spokeswoman Annmarie Beardsworth. “Right now, we know in Rhode Island the disease is not spreading.
