Because Britain had enormous wealth, courtesy of The Empire and was able to spend that time investing, inventing, education and manufacturing. At the same time there was a burgeoning middle class brought on by a more democratic power sharing than other countries had at the time. Also, Steve T’s right – Britain had more distribution powers via the ports across the world in countries they owned taken their by the biggest fleet in the world at that time. The East India Company helped a lot.
