Why did the French hate Louis XVI?
To be precise, some of the French hated the monarchy, and part of that segment became the leadership of the “red terror”, which executed Louis. Most of the French aristocracy and nearly all of the French clergy continued to support the monarchy, eventually paving the way for its restoration. France had a decade of civil war afterwards between the reds and whites, those against and for the King. Like most kings, Louis was completely isolated from the public and knew nothing about their lives and problems. The crisis was surprise he never understood. His responses were partial, inadequate, and in the end, infuriating. Taxes, and the economic breakdowns that caused the king to continually raise taxes, fueled public fears and angers. But Louis was done in by his minor aristocrats and effective demagogues who promised the public both bread and cake. Instead they got Bonaparte, the new emperor.
