Why did the elites leave the covenant?
the prophets lost trust in the elites after master chief was able to kill Regret…feeling that the elites wouldnt be able to protect them any longer they basically switched the elites and brutes roles in the covenant, which basically pissed the elites off…when the elites threatened to resign from the high council or w/e Truth had many of the ruling elites assassinated which then instigated a war on High Charity…however they didnt completely seperate themselves from the covenant until they learned the truth of the halo rings..that they werent for some spiritual journey, as the prophets had told them..but that they were actually weapons built to contain the flood and that setting them off would kill them all…i also think they learned that the humans were actually descendants of their so-called gods, the Forerunners…something the prophets kept hidden amongst the covenant
