Why did the early humans conjure up the idea of a multiplicity of gods?
No, no more than each species being astonishingly well suited for it’s environment means it’s “design” was manipulated. The idea of gods occurred naturally to early humans, for reasons I will take as evident: Self awareness, awareness and fear of mortality, dangers of the world all around them. All arising directly or indirectly from the human brain’s evolutionary adaptations to group living, higher intelligence. The idea of one god being superior to other gods arose from the universal tendency of humans to create god’s in our own image. We had societies and chieftains, early kings. So must the gods. This was also a successful meme. The idea of one god encompassing all the gods was one of many forms of religions that occurred. Some were successful – they reinforced central authority.
