Why did the Earl of Winchilsea imply in 1829 that Kings College was a Trojan Horse?
Winchilsea, a prominent financial backer of the new King’s College, withdrew his support in response to the granting of Catholic emancipation by the Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington, in 1829. About 150 other contributors also cancelled their shares. Winchilsea believed Wellington had all along been insincere in his support for the Anglican establishment and an Anglican King’s College. Instead, he came to view the College as an instrument in a wider programme designed to further the Roman Catholic faith and undermine the established church. Winchilsea’s accusations led to the duel of March 1829.
