Why did the Dutch speaking people resent the minority French speaking in Belgium?
The Dutch speaking Belgians, the Flemings, do not resent the French speaking Belgians, but they dislike their financially irresponsibility and some of their not-very-democratic attitudes. About the point of finances: Brussels and Walloonia both get a lot of money from the federal government – which is largely payed for by the Flemings – to keep up social welfare and their oversized civil servants-paradise (note that 2 thirds of all civil servants in Belgium are Francophone, but they make only up for 40% of the population). So the Flemings wish that the Francophones try every possibility to decrease unemployment, increase activity rate (and decrease the number of civil servants as only this can increase the efficiancy of the government in the long run). This transfer of money of ‘wealthy’ Flanders to ‘poor’ Walloonia should not be unconditional.
