Why did the Continental Congress sponsor the publishing of Bibles and proclaim national days of fasting and ?
The Continental Congress never sponsored the publication of a Bible. There was an entrepreneur who tried to get them to do it, but he failed. Edit: My facts are perfectly straight, and I’ve linked to the source that supports them. A whole chapter, happily online, about this particular “lie for Jesus.” Apparently, you aren’t interested in reading the whole thing. Edit: My apologies, I accidentally linked to the short version. Here is the complete chapter: http://www.liarsforjesus.com/downloads/L… The relevant material begins on page 12, for those interested in actually reading it.
It should tell you something that the Continental Congress was replaced by a different governing body, shouldn’t it? The CC was populated with men who still believed it was OK for their home colonies to have official religions. The Articles of Confederation allowed things like that to occur, because the central government was so weak. Anti-Federalist men like Patrick Henry, a devout Christian who probably would have created an American theocracy if given the chance, were defeated in the debate over the Constitution. Nice try, but the Constitution put an end to such practices. Its drafters understood the importance of keeping religion separate from the state. When Jefferson was president, he refused to enact a national day of prayer and fasting. He said it was none of his or the government’s business to do such a thing.
