Why did the colonists have a right to declare their independence from Britain?
When faced with tyranny, the Declaration of Independence states that citizens have the right and the duty to overthrow that tyranny, and they then go on to list the acts of tyranny by the British Crown that justified their actions. While the Declaration of Independence is not a legal document, it IS the basis from which this country was formed. It’s a reminder to not become too complacent or comfortable; as Thomas Jefferson once said “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” The American public has been plagued with apathy, record low voter turnouts, and a consistent belief that it is necessary to settle for the lesser of two evils when electing representatives. Our liberties have eroded because we’ve allowed them to erode. Someday, as Glenn Beck put it, you’ll wake up on a Monday, and by Friday the America you knew will be gone.
