Why did the City undertake the Hamilton Pool renovation and 901 Sherman Avenue projects in a bad economy?

The money for these projects came from sources other than the General Fund. They are one-time monies that existed before the economic downturn and were designated specifically for these projects, not for normal City operations. Undertaking these projects at this time was also an opportunity for the City to obtain favorable bids while supporting the local job market by continuing construction activity. When completed, there will be regular and ongoing expenses for operation and maintenance of these facilities, particularly for the pool. Some of the funds needed for this purpose are already in the City’s budget. The City is also actively seeking a business partner that will operate the pool and offer recreation programs to the community. Such an arrangement could eliminate the operation and maintenance expense for the City and even produce some much needed income.
