Why did the CFMF decide to build a hall?
Festival Hall is the centerpiece of a decade-long plan to diligently manage Calgary Folk Music Festival Society’s finances and to leverage the Festival’s long-term success. 10 years ago, we were forced to move out of our donated office space on 30 days notice. Since then, we have looked for an affordable and consistent space to rent where the whims and costs of the market don’t jeopardize our ability to survive. We have moved twice, and are currently in a month-to-month lease. Given the increasing number of musical presentations (concerts, Boot Camp, Song Contest, Buzz Job) that we annually present, a permanent home, including an office and performance space/volunteer centre became our goal. We spent the ensuing years after leaving our donated space saving money and searching for a building which would meet our needs. We didn’t find anything we could afford, so four years ago we purchased a small plot of land in Inglewood and began developing plans for our own building.
