Why did the Betamax standard never catch on?

0

Betamax didn’t catch on for many reasons. The two most prominent are. 1. Sony was unwilling to share their tchnology [IE; License other companies to make Betamax machines.] ARE YOU LISTENING MACINTOSH? 2. Sony released Betamax as a one hour format thinking most people wanted to record their favorite 1/2 or 1 hour TV shows. JVC released their VHS recorders with 2 hour recording times. They figured rightly that people really wanted to record their favorite movies. By the time Sony came out with Betamx II [two hours] JVC had figured out EP [then called SLP] giving people 6 hours on one tape. Also, JVC licenced other Mfgrs to produce VHS recorders. Once that happened, Movies came out predominately on VHS. VHS sales snowballed while betamax sales all but disappeared.
