Why did the Australian PM make disparaging remarks about Alabama?

Robin Williams made some jokes about Australian people, calling them “basically English rednecks”. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd replied by saying “I think Robin Williams should go and spend a bit of time in Alabama before he frames comments about anyone being particularly redneck,” implying that there are plenty of what he perceives as ‘rednecks’ in Robin Williams’s own country, the USA, so he is being hypocritical and should leave Australians alone. Obviously it’s all a bit frivolous. Robin Williams is very funny while I’m sure Mr. Rudd is an excellent Prime Minister.
