Why did the Ancient Romans worship such flawed gods and goddesses?
The ancient Romans seem to have borrowed much of their mythology from the Greeks, and identified their gods with the Greek gods. The Greeks seemed to see their gods and goddesses as being capricious, cruel, and in many cases sexually voracious. Perhaps they felt that this explained a lot about the way humans were. Possibly this is why Christianity caught on in such a big way in the roman empire, because they saw in Christianity something more positive than they were offered by their Pagan gods.
