For numerous reasons: 1) The British were laying heavy and unfair taxation upon the American people. 2) The British were restricting the free trade of American commerce. 3) The British wanted the Americans to submit to the British government, namely King George and the monarchy. 4) The Americans wanted complete religious freedom rather than submitting to the Church of England. (I’m certain many modern-day revisionists will challenge this one just as they have questioned Washington’s religious affiliation.) 5) The Americans were ready to adopt their own constitution, free from British laws and government. 6) The Americans wanted better teeth. (Just kidding! Couldn’t resist.) All of this required a revolution and a rebellion against the existing British presence/occupation.
