Why did the allies demand an unconditional surrender from the axis powers?
to prevent another German leader from saying that Germany was not really defeated in the previous war, just as Hitler did after the Versailles settlement in 1919, as well as to ensure Stalin that the other Allies were fully committed to the war, and would not leave Russia standing alone against Germany.
